Rhodes is an absolute gem of a village hidden in the Real Southern Drakensberg in the Eastern Cape Highlands. It is located on the banks of the Bell River that is home to wild rainbow trout.
Rhodes is way off the beaten track and is a destination of note. It is a village almost lost in time that has been afforded a degree of protection by virtue of its remoteness. It was proclaimed as a Conservation Area in 1997. This means that one may not build structures that do not fit into the “streetscape”.
It is near two important landmarks, the highest of which is the Ben McDhui peak which, at 3001m above sea-level, is one of the highest peaks in the country. The second is the famous Naudesnek Pass on the R396 between Barkly East and Nqanqa Rhu (Maclear).
